Maryland Governor Makes Changes to State Regulation

Newly elected Maryland Governor Larry Hogan is already creating ripples in the water as he repealed the state’s Department of Agriculture’s phosphorusmanagement tool (PMT) regulation, where farmers will now have to stop applying litter that contains phosphorous to soils and instead use commercial fertilizer with balanced nutrients for soil. This comes after numerous tests have shown that phosphorous from fields can leak into groundwater and become a water pollutant, so commendation must be given to the Governor for this initiative.

This transition will carry a high price tag and is not guaranteed to correct damage that has been done or prevent future damage; one proposed solution is to implement more soil testing throughout the state to better isolate any abnormal levels opposed to overhauling an entire industry.
