Why You Should Always Hire a Professional Home Inspector Before You Buy

In the 1986 comedy The Money Pit starring Tom Hanks and Shelly Long, a young couple purchases a pre-owned home at a price that seems too good to be true, which of course it is! Shortly after they sign on the dotted line and take ownership of the property, everything that can go wrong does.  While it makes for a mighty funny cinematic experience, the movie does have something important to say to prospective homeowners. That is:  you should never buy a home without having it inspected by a professional.

We saw The Money Pit as an comedic cautionary tale about an issue that is far too common even today.  At a time when almost anyone can access information about almost any salable property on the internet, many new owners fail to call in the pros to perform the single most important step of the home buying process–the inspection.

Why hire an inspector?

Everybody’s an expert until something goes wrong. Sure, we can get most of the information we need about a property on the internet. But when it comes time to buy, only an expert can tell us what lies beneath an ostensibly prepossessing facade. Home inspectors don’t deal in the superficial. It is their job to dig deeper and examine the major systems of the property you are considering, including the electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and drainage systems.

An experienced inspector can also spot potential problems that may require expensive repairs five years down the road, such as water damage and mold growth.  In short, they are the best investment any prospective homeowner can make!
